In September 2008, I was told that I had cancer of the rectum. At 76, I should be enjoying a simple life with my wife instead of making frequent visits to hospital and having to undergo so much pain. Today, my wife and I only have each other, my son died tragically many years ago. Now, it looks to me as if my time to visit him is drawing closer. What about my wife, what will happen to her? She too is unwell, she has a serious eye problem which needs medical attention.
I am old, I do not work anymore. My wife is 67 and she makes a little bit of money babysitting and sometimes washing dishes at the side and this keeps us going monthly. With so many things happening now, it worries me a lot. Now, my day-to-day activities revolve around visiting hospital, getting treatment and more treatment.
The place which I call home actually belongs to my friend, he is truly what you would call “a friend in need is a friend in deed”. He allows us to stay with him for as long as we wish to.
Previously, I had undergone two surgeries in Hospital Kuala Lumpur, and I can still recall the painful recovery experiences. For this cancer, to control the spread of the cancer cells, I still have to go through chemotherapy and radiotherapy. This has been very stressful to my wife and me.
Recently, I was visited by MAKNA officers enquiring about my health and whether have I been going for my follow-up treatments. I informed them that that the doctors and medical personnel have been very kind. They usually take the trouble to explain to me the procedures and try their best to comfort me everytime I am in the ward.
When I learnt that my request for a financial assistance from MAKNA was approved, I was very touched and moved. Besides this, surgical equipment, stapler and Endo Gia were also made available by them for my surgery which cost RM4,350 in total. I receive RM200 monthly and also colostomy bags. All this has only been possible through the hospital’s welfare department referral to MAKNA. The help from MAKNA somewhat is a relief to me. Otherwise, I would have had to exhaust almost non-existent avenues to raise money for those items I needed.
From MAKNA, I understood that the funds that I received are from generous people like you. I am glad that my troubles have not gone unheard; instead I am “looked after” by people whom I have never met or known, and perhaps will never meet.
If you are somehow touched with my story, please help; it’s time to give generously because there are many others out there who are experiencing similar or worst situations than me.
Thank You.
