Dear Sir/Madam
RE: GRATITUDE TOWARDS REACHABLE HEALTHCARE FOR LEUKAEMIA PATIENTS
I am Ai Ling, daughter of leukaemia patient Ooi Hock Hin who has recently undergone stem cell transplant at the specialised HUKM-MAKNA-Maybank Bone Marrow Transplant (BMT) Unit. I am thrilled to share that he has undergone the transplant, recuperated in the specialised and isolated BMT ward in HUKM, and is now recovering from home.
My dad has been a bladder cancer survivor for 10 years. Unfortunately, he was diagnosed with leukaemia in late October 2006. The saying that every cloud has a silver lining holds true. In our initial moments of despair, we met kind doctors, nurses and caregivers at Penang General Hospital (PGH). After many rounds of chemotherapy treatment at PGH, my dad was referred to Hospital University Kebangsaan Malaysia (HUKM), Kuala Lumpur in February 2007, as a potential stem cell transplant candidate.
Here, we met a delightful doctor; Dr. Goh Kim Yen. Dr. Goh has done a wonderful job administrating my dad’s case and we are keeping our fingers crossed that the transplant procedure is a successful one. 30th May 2007, Day Zero of the transplant day was also the day my dad experienced being a grandfather for the first time. It was really a happy day for my family.
Under Dr. Goh’s commendable and Sister Margaret’s experienced guidance, the nurses and caregivers at the BMT ward are certainly helpful, ever-smiling and deserve much praise. The invaluable supportive attitudes truly help a sick cancer patient in riding out the tough periods when undergoing countless chemotherapy treatments and transplant procedures.
Despite our difficulty of raising funds for my dad’s transplant procedure by ourselves, my family is truly grateful to the great effort of MAKNA and Maybank for setting up the BMT Ward and subsidising the costly treatment at HUKM to enable it to reach all Malaysians, like my retired dad. Although my dad is not a civil servant and does not have insurance coverage, he could still benefit from the top notch medical care in HUKM. The collaboration between HUKM, MAKNA and Maybank has enabled excellent medical care for cancer patients, especially for those who could not afford private medical care.
My family prayed that we will be able to put the many difficult months behind us now and look forward to a better future with my dad. Thank you again to all doctors, nurses and caregivers at HUKM and to MAKNA and Maybank as well. You’ve helped my dad to recover. Thank you.
Yours truly,
Ooi Ai Ling
