Becoming a volunteer with MAKNA is one of the most significant ways you could help cancer patients who desperately need our assistance. Consider yourself a proud ‘ambassador’ of the MAKNA brand!

As time is precious, sharing yours with cancer patients and their families makes it all the more meaningful.

You could help at our treatment centre by spending some quality time with patients simply by being there and providing a listening ear. Our volunteers are involved in numerous activities with our patients and enjoy simple activities such as walks and playing board games.

MAKNA volunteer activities have included or can include:

Volunteer Appreciation Get Together
A Volunteer Appreciation Get Together themed “Magical Moments?was held on 27 and 28 January 2007.

Recreational activities for young cancer patients
Recreational activities are organized for cancer children to spend some time away from the hospital settings. Children are taken to Theme parks, meet favourite celebrities (local/international), educational, centers and much-much more. As a volunteer you will buddy a child who becomes your best buddy of the day.

From charity runs to football matches to concerts to car washes, MAKNA is always in need of volunteers in such events.

MAKNA Introductory Programme (MIP)

MIP is the first of three compulsory training modules, which every MAKNA volunteer will be required to undergo before being designated a ‘Trained Volunteer’. This module equips potential volunteers with the necessary knowledge and information about MAKNA and the programmes and services it provides to cancer patients, their families, high-risk groups and the public.

The programme is also an opportunity for MAKNA to get to know its volunteers. MIP session also provide an avenue for volunteers to identify their areas of interest or expertise they would like to volunteer and contribute.

Basic Nursing Care I & II (BNC I & II)

The BNC modules are divided into two sessions and designed to expose volunteers to areas of personal hygiene and to ways to handle and provide care to patients. This aspect includes training volunteers on the proper way to thoroughly clean their hands, to handle bedridden patients, and to the proper etiquette of visiting patients at home and hospitals.

Home and hospital visits

Volunteers would be expected to visit patients in their homes and/or at hospitals, which is part of the BNC modules. More often than not, the patients visited are mainly those who receive aid from MAKNA’s Patient Assistance Programme.

These visits are an integral part of a volunteer’s life at MAKNA, as it represents introducing him or her to cancer patients and their families. Volunteers are encouraged to witness treatments and in some cases, the hardship facing these patients so they could better understand the disease as well as appreciate their efforts, however small.
