"...lot of people in Malaysia regardless of
race, religion and age suffering from cancer and need help ranging from
financial assistance to guidance..."
Kong
Yieng Ing Intern Student, Malaysia Served MAKNA from 8th May to 11st June 2006
My
five-week industrial training at MAKNA from 8 May 2006 to 11 June 2006 has
given me a lot of experience and knowledge which are not available in the
lecture room. I take this opportunity to thank all staff at MAKNA who have
extended their help and for the lessons and guidance given.
My experience in processing the bursary application (patient assistance
programme) made me aware that there are actually a lot of people in
Malaysia regardless of race, religion and age suffering from cancer and need
help ranging from financial assistance to guidance. While processing the
bursary applications, I can imagine the pain and the suffering the cancer
patients undergo while at the same time facing economic difficulties.
Indirectly it gave me the willpower to process the bursary cases as quick and
as precise as possible with the hope that the assistance can help alleviate the
patients' financial burden.
I am proud to be a part of MAKNA and to be involved in fundraising projects
like the Direct Debit Donor Programame (DDDP), Sens Saves Life (SSL) and
Payroll Giving among others. One can learn a lot from the processing of the
bursary applications. Each case shall be processed within two weeks, to enable
a patient in financial need to get the necessary assistance as soon as
possible.
While at MAKNA I was also given the opportunity to go for Home Visits that
enabled me to update important information required on the patients receiving
financial assistance. Through these visits I am also able to see and observe
for myself the actual condition of the patients. It also gives me an
opportunity to learn more about the people around and their various characters.
From these first hand experiences too MAKNA is able to assess whether the
assistance given to the patients is sufficient, lacking or in excess while at
the same time preventing the patients from abusing the assistance given.
Through the Basic Nursing Care lectures provided by Datin Hamidah, Nurse
Manager was among others I was exposed to, the correct way to clean my hands. I
also learn how to clean a bedridden patient, the various methods of changing a
bed sheet and how to avoid patients from getting bed sores. All these are
valuable information in our daily lives which we are not able to obtain in the
lecture room.
My participation in the Street Music project, a fundraising activity, I learn
that there are basically two groups of people, one group are those who are
sensitive to the sufferings that cancer patients undergo and thus are ever
ready to donate to our cause, while some are not as generous. Although my
contribution to this project is very small but I was proud to know that I had
played my part in helping cancer patients who need help.
In conclusion I would like to say that the experiences I obtained throughout my
practical training at MAKNA will forever be preciously remembered.
