Served MAKNA from 8th May to 2nd July 2006

I believe every dream can come true. This belief in your mind will slowly bring you closer in realising your dream. If this dream can't come true, we can achieve the goal which is almost near to our dream. I don't know when my dream will come true, to become a successful businesswoman cum a good volunteer in future. With the time I have and support from people around me, I know that I can make my dreams come true. For a start, the practical training at MAKNA will able me in becoming a volunteer. This is a small move towards my dream.

Before coming to MAKNA for practical, I sent 2 applications as required by my Human Development faculty, one was to a hotel and the second was to MAKNA. But my heart was for MAKNA because it has the elements of people and service to community. The reason is that I hope I can touch someone who is suffering from an illness.

I had very little knowledge about MAKNA and was not very sure what to expect from my placement in MAKNA as a practical student. I was in the impression that I will be seeing and touching cancer patients'everyday, more like patient care. But I was wrong; I was placed in the MAKNA Headquarters and assigned with office works like patient data entry, cancer awareness exhibition, patient home visit and fundraising.

The patient data entry, processing and patient home visit made me realize how MAKNA is reaching many cancer patients throughout Malaysia. That made me feel that there are many cancer patients out there who don't even have a proper meal let alone going for treatment. I often feel for these cancer patients, so when ever there is an application for assistance, I immediately process the case fast, by doing so my report gets completed and approved fast, the patient gets the assistance as soon as possible. That gives me a sense of contribution and I always remind myself to give the best for the needy.

During my 2 months practical in MAKNA, I gained a lot of experience. As an inexperienced student I was scared as my English was poor so I was afraid to speak English. But my colleagues encouraged me always, it's alright to make mistake, it is only then I can learn and improve my English. I have to correspond in English with shopping malls in realizing "Street Music" a fundraising event by young school children from a German School, Petaling Jaya and local government school. It was a challenge but a memorable one for my colleagues helped me out. I was guided with courage. There was a sad moment during my practical, it is when my father passed away; it was too much to handle emotionally. I received words of condolences from MAKNA staff.

I sincerely thank everybody at MAKNA especially Dato Mohd Farid Ariffin, Puan Farahida, Mr. Vemanna, Mr. Ramesh and Puan Russilawati. Dato Mohd Farid Ariffin the President of MAKNA and Puan Farahida the General Manager of MAKNA, gave me confidence and encouragement during my practical in MAKNA. My supervisor, Mr.Vemanna always teaches me to do things and helped me to solve problems encountered with patients. It was nice working with Mr. Ramesh and Puan Russilawati because they always shared their experiences with me and taught me how to overcome the challenges.

In conclusion, I think I was so lucky to be accepted by MAKNA to do my practical training. I gained a lot of experiences and improvements at MAKNA including more knowledge related to cancer, communication skills, and the ability to explore myself and many more. I understand life better, the importance to spend time with family members. I believe life is unpredictable; we need to cherish life because life is meaningful. We must live with great passion and share our great values and do not regret life. When we leave one day we know we have lived a beautiful life.
